I got sick, and couldn’t work for a couple of weeks.
As I manage a one-person business, getting sick is a big deal. There’s no back-up, and nothing gets done while I’m sick.
I’ve been freelancing as a writer for 15+ years, and – with very few exceptions – managed to finish my writing assignments on time. I never bothered to plan ahead, to schedule extra time to finish writing assignments in case I got sick.
But managing a publishing business is different: I can’t set – and publicly announce – publishing dates or plan marketing campaigns, and then change dates at the last minute due to illness. Oops… I didn’t think I would get sick… unforseen circumstances… so sorry….
No, that won’t work.
I need to rethink my time management strategies, and plan ahead: Establishing a publishing schedule for articles which I post on this website, and pre-scheduling those dates, is the first step I’m taking in regard to better time management.
I’ll post two articles each week, on Wednesdays and Sundays. I’ll write those articles in advance, so even if I get sick, new content will be published on this website twice a week.
I’ll also need to consider the possibility of illness in regard to book publishing schedules, and allow extra time to finish all projects. It’s not something I had to worry about until now, but my recent bout with illness has brought this issue front and center.
