Now that I am fully committed to publishing English texts from the 19th century, I want to learn more about English and American literature in general. I applied for a study place at the University of Vienna’s Bachelor programme of English & American Studies for the academic year 2026/27.
I had to take an online self-assessment test, and might have to sit for an entrance exam, for which I already paid the registration fee of 50.00 Euros. The registration period ends tomorrow, on May 4, 2026. I fully expect to pass the test and qualify for a study place, if an entrance exam should, in fact, be administered. However, I did a little bit of research, and found out that while entrance exams are technically required for certain study programmes, no entrance exams were actually administered for this particular study programme in the past few years.
For the academic year 2025/26, 467 study places were available, but only 180 prospective students registered for an entrance exam. So no test was given, and everyone who applied for a study place was accepted into the programme. The data for the academic year 2024/25 show similar numbers: 467 study places, 224 exam registrations, no entrance exams necessary.
The Bachelor’s programme of English & American Studies at the University of Vienna consists of three main modules: an introduction to the study of language & language analysis, an introduction to the study of literature, and an introduction to Anglophone cultures and societies.
Studying English & American literature, learning how to make paper, and publishing English texts from the 19th century….life is good!
